Akira Kurosawa – Composing Movement

Tony Zhou‘s video essay series is well-known, and other examples can be found in our Best Practices section. This particular piece about Kurosawa’s exquisite sense of movement is a fine example of Zhou’s trademark style. He methodically covers all aspects of a particular subject, with an eye for both the big impact of the artistic choices a director makes, and the small details that add flavor.

Zhou adds other voices to the mix by using quotes from renowned directors (the authoritative argument), and by contrasting his object of study with poor examples from pop culture (the counterpoint). In all, a well made and well argued video essay.
