Scorsese, 50 Years Later

“As you grow older, you change,” Martin Scorsese once said.

He was lying.

Milad Tangshir proves as much in this concise but revealing mash-up. He stirs together fragments of Scorsese’s student film It’s not Just You, Murray! (1964) with scenes from his more recent The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). The result is almost seamless. Although fifty years separate these two movies, the themes and visual style are remarkably consistent. The protagonists share an obsession with material wealth: a fixation they profess without shyness or shame, blatantly breaking the fourth wall.

Some things never change, apparently. Nor should they. This video essay shows the consistency of Scorsese’ oeuvre, not his lack of innovation.
