‘A Dream of the Dream of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’ is a two-part audiovisual essay project by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin commissioned to accompany the Australian Cinémathèque’s ‘Rainer Werner Fassbinder’ retrospective. Each part is keyed to a selection of the films included in the program. Part 1, released October 2017, is subtitled “Gestures”. It concentrates on the performance aspect of Fassbinder’s film and television work: the very particular language of gesture and posture that he first developed in his ‘anti-theatre’ ensemble. On screen, Fassbinder extended this performance style to include distinctive strategies of staging and editing. The result is an innovative path forged between analytical distance and intense emotion. Part 2 of ‘A Dream of the Dream of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’ will be made available online in May 2018. The Australian Cinémathèque retrospective is the first to be staged in Australia. Part 1 runs from 14 October to 15 November 2017, and Part 2 from 1 June to 4 July 2018.
